Thought I'd get a little movie discussion going on here. ^_^
I'm really into Japanese films myself. I like alot of lesser known/cult cinema (yeah, I'm a weirdo), the old samurai films, and a little bit of the more mainstream stuff put out there. My personal favorite genre is horror, but I'll give just about anything a try. Some of my favorite films include:
Naked Blood Freeze Me Throne of Blood Tomie - Rebirth Battle Royale Ichi the Killer All Night Long (series) Visitor Q Infection Miyamoto Musashi (Trilogy) The Sword of Doom Happiness of the Katakuri's Jigoku Ju-On - The Curse
etc. etc. etc. If anyone ever needs any recommendations, don't hesitate to ask. I've got more Asian films than I know what to do with...
So, what are some of everyone else's favorite films?

You LIKED Tomie? XDDD The acting was terrible, especially the whole falling down the stairs thing and the wheelchair push. I laugh everytime I see it. XDDD
My picks: - Audition - ALIVE - Azumi - Uzumaki - Casshern - A Tale of Two Sisters - Shaolin Soccer - Ringu 0

I suppose the comedic factor and overall cheesiness of some of it is part of what made it enjoyable for me. I liked the concept of the Tomie character and I thought Miki Sakai did a decent enough job playing her. Not a masterpiece by any means, but I had fun watching it.

I always get a kick out of that scene with the stairs. I love how she stops rolling, and then throws herself down the stairs again when she didn't even have the momentum necessary. XD

I haven't seen many other Japanese movies besides Ju-on (the low budget version) and Shall We Dance?. I'd like to see others though. o.o Provided that they have subtitles.

I'd highly recommend Battle Royale, if you haven't seen it. It's been one of the more popular Japanese movies in recent years among people on the net. (shouldn't be too hard to find a download. ~_^ ) Definitely a great film by Kinji Fukasaku, his last actually. I haven't seen the sequel yet, but I haven't heard too many great things about it, so I'll probably skip it.
If you're into samurai films at all, there's a laundry list of them to check out. Top recommendations there would be Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, Miyamoto Musashi, Sanjuro, Yojimbo, and The Sword of Doom. IFC has "Samurai Saturdays" every week, you can probably find some of these on there occassionally if you have the channel. (They usually show a samurai film starting at 8:00 AM (EST) and it's repeated once or twice throughout the day
I'd also recommend checking out Naked Blood if you can find it. The only reservation I have about recommending it to people is that it is a rather graphic film and you have to have a pretty strong stomach for it.
The story centers around a young genious that comes out with a chemical that he names "My Son" but can't find any way to test it. He decides to visit the hospital that his mother works at and slips the chemical in with an anti-pregnancy drug that his mother is testing on three subjects. Some time goes by and his drug begins to have an adverse affect on the three ladies. Each of them has something that the enjoy more than anything else, and the drug causes them to over-indulge to a disgusting degree. I won't say anymore because it'll spoil the film, but if you've got the stomach for it, seek it out. It's definitely on my top three list.

Ju-On's "low budget" version had two parts because it was a made for TV movie which soon evolved into the movies.
Battle Royale.. a touchy subject for me. I enjoyed the book alot more. I felt the movie was changed too much and didn't do the book justice. While it IS certainly a good movie, I feel it's a tad overrated.
I recommend ALIVE (which takes place in three rooms the entire movie) and Azumi. Audition would be my favorite Japanese horror movie. The first half of it is rather normal and then it does a complete 180 and turns into a crazy psychological thriller. It was on 100 Scariest Movie moments in the top ten (100 Scariest Movie moments was an AMERICAN show mind you). I believe it was on Bravo. I remember someone saying "The last 20 minutes of Audition are the most painful 20 minutes I've ever seen." and I'd have to agree.

Haven't seen either of those three... I think a friend of mine mentioned having Azumi, I'll have to see if he's got the others too.

I started reading the Battle Royale book first cause I wanted to read it before seeing the actual movie. I didn't get to finish reading it though cause I was borrowing it from someone. ><
